Lens Impression
1台で湿板写真の撮影、現像、定着を行う機材、Dubroniの世界初のインスタントカメラについては、Appareil Dubroni 「No.1 Photographie de Poche」 Cameraを参照してください。
当時の多くのカメラレンズがそうであったように、このDubroniのカメラのレンズにも、「ポートレート用」「風景用」に別々のレンズが用意されていました。ポートレート用はペッツバール型で構成されており、現在確認できるこのカメラに装着されている多くのレンズがこのタイプのようです。一方で風景用に用意されたのが、貼り合わせダブレット1枚で作られた非常にシンプルなレンズ。焦点距離は51.6mmと短く、ライカ判標準と一致していました（もちろんこの時代にライカはありませんが、、）。
史上初の写真用カメラであるジルー商会ダゲレオタイプカメラに装着されていたのも、シャルル・シュバリエが設計した同じ貼り合わせダブレットタイプのレンズでしたが、おそらくこのDubroni用のレンズは、1857年にThomas
Grubbが設計したアプラナート補正型（Aplanatic lens）ではないかと思われます。シュバリエのレンズが両凸レンズと凹レンズを貼り合わせたのに対し、メニスカスレンズを採用してレンズのガラス面をすべて被写体に対して凹面とし、貼り合わせの曲率が高いアプラナート補正型は、球面収差の補正は優れていましたが、かなり強めの樽型の歪曲が出るのが特徴です。今回の作例でもよく出ているようです。
Dubroniの風景用のタイプは珍しく、現在あまり市場で見る機会は多くありません。
一般的にこの最少のガラス枚数のレンズでは収差補正に大きな限界があり、風景をきちんと描写するのに適しているとは思えないのですが、このレンズにはあらかじめかなり絞り込んだサイズの円盤が固着されており、その絞りの効果で球面収差、色収差をはじめとする画面を乱す要素の排除を試みています。これは当時の同構成のレンズでは一般的に行われた方法といえます。
しかし、やはりそれだけでは限界があり、今回の作例を見ても、まだ多くの収差の影響が画面中心部を含めて残っているようです。

As many of other cameras and lenses were the same , both 'Portrait lens' and 'Landscape(Paysage in French)' were prepared for this Dubroni Wet Plate
'Instant' camera. The composition of the Portrait lens was Petzval type which we can find mostly with this Dubroni camera.
The other type for Landscape
has a simple composition of one Doublet lens.
This type is famous for the lens equipped on the very first photographic
camera Daguerreotype sold from Giroux company, but I estimate this Dubroni
lens
has a different composition of Aplanatic lens which was invented by Thomas
Grubb in 1857. The Chevalier lens has used a double convex lens to paste
with a concave lens, whereas the Aplantic lens was adapted a meniscus lens which lead all the surfaces of glass became concave to the subject.
The strong curve of pasted surface was better for the improvement of spherical aberration, but remains rather stong barrel shaped distortion which I can
find in photos below.
This type is more rare which we can seldom find in current market.
In general, minimum one Doublet lens has difficulty to settle aberration, with which I feel it is not so suitable for Landscape photograph, however this lens
originally was equipped with a disk with one hole whose
size was comparable to f5.6-f8 aperture for trying to control spherical
aberration, chromatic aberration
and others. It is not so uncommon way to improve aberrations in that
age.
However it is not enough effective of course, I could find some effect
of aberrations remaind in the photos below.
